Just when it seemed like things were all sunshine and rainbows in Green Bay after Aaron Rodgers re-committed to the team, we have this.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, star wide receiver Davante Adams has informed the team’s front office that he will not play on the franchise tag. Adams will make a little over $20-million under the tag if he plays in 2022.
Tom Pelissero has added that Adams isn’t obliged to take part in mini camp, training camp or any other preseason activities until he signs the tender. He could still show up just before week 1 and make the entire amount due to him under the franchise tag.
With the two teams apparently still far apart on a deal, it’ll be interested to see how this all plays out. Will the Packers give in and pay one of the NFL’s best wideouts what he’s worth? Will Adams give in and decide to play another year with buddy Aaron Rodgers while still under the tag? Could we see a holdout that last into the 2022 season? Or a Davante Adams trade, perhaps?
Things are expected to get pretty wild in the NFL this week, with free agency officially opening up. But this is one heck of a way to kick off the week on a Monday morning. Stay tuned. Things could get messy for the Cheeseheads.
