Back in 2016, Darius Slay inked a four-year, $50.2 million extension to stay with the Detroit Lions for the foreseeable future, making him one of the top paying cornerbacks in the entire league.
Slay has 2 years left on his current contract, just $22M in base salary (another $1M total in bonuses) on his deal. He’s actually underpaid, but that didn’t seem to mind to a fan who called him out for not honoring those two years he has left.
Slay came across that comment and fired back by calling out the Lions as well as the National Football League for cutting players all the time when they still have years left on their contract.
He’s not wrong. If a team deems that a player is not worth anything to them anymore, they make the best decision for the state of the franchise and nobody seems to bat an eye. But as soon as a player doesn’t want to honor a contract and get more, the player is always looked at as the bad guy for wanting what he’s worth before the team deems him to be a liability and cuts them in the near future.
The only money that is notable on NFL contracts are the guaranteed dollars. Everything else is just white noise that the players most likely will never see.

Slay is currently skipping OTAs and it’s likely that he wants a new deal that’s on par with what other players are making at his position.
