Daniel Jones and the New York Giants agreed to a deal before last week’s franchise tag deadline following some intense negotiating.
The 25-year-old quarterback signed a deal worth up to $160 million with a potential $35 million more in incentives. He’s guaranteed $82 million, and his AAV is tied for the seventh-highest in the NFL at his position.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Jones’ reps initially demanded a salary of $47 million per year, which would have paid him more than Patrick Mahomes. You read that correctly.
“The packet was ready to be sent to the Giants on Feb. 21. It came with a jaw-dropping proposal: Jones should get $47 million per year.
“That number was $12 million clear of a $35-million-per-year proposal the Giants had made. The knee-jerk reaction from the team was: We’re gonna pay DJ more than Patrick Mahomes.”
The former first-round pick has cleared the first hurdle of his career. He knows he must now live up to the expectations that come with a four-year, $160 million deal.
Jones answered the call in 2022, posting a career-best 3,205 passing yards, a 15-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and finishing with 708 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
