Dan Snyder appears to be seeking the pettiest exit possible, with his tenure as the owner of the Washington Commanders possibly drawing to an end.
The billionaire has been forced to sell the NFL team following a number of serious allegations as it pertains to unseemly operating practices. And pressure now mounting as a new report from ESPN which came out this week has gone into detail about a federal investigation of which he’s the subject.
Snyder is said to have barred Jeff Bezos from entering a private auction for the franchise but his unwillingness to keep hold of the Commanders goes deeper than his personal beef with the former Amazon CEO. According to The Washington Post, the 58-year-old is demanding that the league protect him from future legal liability if the team is sold.
Dan Snyder Is Seeking Protection From The NFL
ESPN’s report suggests that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has shielded Snyder by burying complaints from former team shareholders regarding fraudulent infractions. But, if that’s the case, Snyder wants more.
“Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder and his attorneys have demanded that fellow NFL franchise owners and the league indemnify him against future legal liability and costs if he sells the team, two people with direct knowledge of the NFL’s inner workings and the owners’ attitudes said,” the Post’s report reads.
Snyder has also threatened to sue the NFL if his demands are not met but that might end up working against him as other owners have considered revisiting the option that would see them vote to remove him as the owner should he refuse to sell the team.

The Post adds:
Snyder’s demands, which include a threat to sue if the indemnification condition is not met, have angered some owners and renewed discussion about the possibility of taking a vote to remove him from ownership of the Commanders if he does not sell the franchise, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic and the legal threat.
The league requires 24 votes in order to have Snyder unseated and it’s believed that they wouldn’t have gotten all of them in the past, given that he’s friends with owners such as Jerry Jones. But his threats might have gotten them to change their minds.
