Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino had the misfortunes of confirming a rumor regarding his appearance in “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.”
The then-Miami Dolphins superstar quarterback agreed to make a cameo appearance in the 1994 blockbuster film that turned Jim Carrey into a mega comedy movie star. The Dolphins NFL team was a central component of the film’s plot.
During his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show”, Marino revealed that he made the mistake of accepting a flat rate instead of taking an offer for a percentage of the movie’s growth. The movie made $107.2 million at the global box office.
“I didn’t think I was gonna do it (the movie), because I read the script, and then I got to meet Jim Carrey…it’s either going to do really well, or it’s going to be nowhere. So they offered me a percentage of the gross, and knowing me, I didn’t take it.
I took the short end cash, but that’s okay.”
It’s unknown how much the Hall of Famer was paid for his cameo appearance, but it obviously was significantly less than what Marino would have made if he took the percentage gross offer from the studio instead.
Marino made about $50 million in his playing career. After retiring, he worked analyst roles for CBS and HBO’s “Inside the NFL” program. Marino currently works as a special advisor for the Dolphins and frequently attends team practices.
