Dan Campbell told a story about one of the players he coached in Miami, and it became very notable because he said the unnamed player reeked of alcohol anytime he saw him. However, the player would always play his butt off on the field.
The Detroit Lions head coach never sent that player home because the guy loved football and worked hard in practice.
“Some of these guys, I remember I had a guy in Miami, god he love ball. He was a dynamic football player, but he came in everyday just reeking of alcohol. He was probably on a bender for who knows how long, but god he loved football,” Campbell explained.
“He showed up, he didn’t have any MAs [missed assignments], he hustled non-stop, and it’s like, you know what? You’ll find a way to make that guy work. Not saying we want those guys, but he loved ball, and he had success, and he’s still playing today, but the way.”
Dan Campbell last coached in Miami in 2015, so it’s anyone’s guess as to who that player is. Kudos to Campbell for not naming the guy, but I’m sure whoever it is, they would’ve felt better if he hadn’t talked about the story at all.
The Lions finished the 2021 season with a 3-13-1 record, with the tie coming against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10.
