Tragedy hit the NFL on Saturday with the death of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins, but all of that mourning turned into rage after a set of wildly over-the-line comments by a Hall of Fame executive.
Gil Brandt used an appearance on the NFL’s SiriusXM channel to make cracks about Haskins’ decision-making and manner of death. The 90-year-old Brandt described him as “a guy living to be dead,” and criticized his decision to leave school early, and speculated “maybe if he stayed in school a year he wouldn’t do silly things,” alluding to Haskins reportedly getting hit by a truck while walking on an interstate.
After several hours of some of the harshest criticism you will see on social media in the NFL, Brandt tweeted an apology admitting he “reacted carelessly and insensitively.”

“All these mfs crazy. Life is bigger than some damn sports”
Haskins was killed on Saturday morning after being struck by a dump truck on Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale. Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda said that Haskins was struck as he attempted to cross the westbound lanes of the highway. Haskins had been training in South Florida with some of his Steelers teammates, including fellow quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, running back Najee Harris, and tight end Pat Freiermuth.
Haskins was signed by the Steelers in 2021 as the third-string quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph, but was only active for one game this past season and did not appear on the field.
