Over a year ago around this time, Damar Hamlin was in a hospital recovering after suffering cardiac arrest mid-game during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
His name was once again trending in January this year but for an entirely different reason.
The Bills tried to dial up a fake punt when it appeared they had a man advantage. The play backfired immediately. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin found himself at the center of the spotlight as the play went to him.
Trailing 27-24 with 12:57 to play in the fourth quarter, Bills coach Sean McDermott elected to use none other than Hamlin as the ball carrier on a fake punt on 4th and 5 at Buffalo’s own 30-yard line. He picked up two years and was stopped well short of the first down.

Hamlin has miraculously continued his NFL career after collapsing on the field in cardiac arrest after a freak collision in a game against the Bengals at the end of last season.
Despite the terrible play call, the Chiefs bailed the Bills out when they gave the ball to Mecole Hardman and the receiver fumbled for the second time in the game. The ball went out of the end zone for a touchback.
The Bills went three-and-out on the next drive and their last chance to tie the game ended in heartbreak when Tyler Bass missed a 44-yard field goal with less than two minutes to play.
The Chiefs now advance to the AFC Championship game where they take on the Ravens at 3 p.m. on Sunday in Baltimore.
