Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell seemed to suggest that Dalvin Cook will be gone by the beginning of next season amid the uncertainty surrounding the running back’s future.
Cook has been the subject of trade rumors all offseason and the general notion when it comes to him points to a trade or a release. The RB remains one of the best players in his position and has been selected for the Pro Bowl in four consecutive years. But it appears his time in Minnesota could be coming to an end.
With the 27-year-old due a base salary of $10.4 million in 2023, he is believed to have become surplus to requirements for the Vikings, who recently took him off their Twitter banner photo and replaced him with backup RB Alexander Mattison.
What Kevin O’Connell Had To Say About Mattison
O’Connell had some high praise for Mattison this week. But the glowing review implied that Cooks is done as a Vikings player.
“It’s been really good to see Alex Mattison take a few more reps and really show that all three-down kinda ownership that he’s been capable of for a long time,” the HC told reporters on Tuesday.
Mattison has indeed been great for Minnesota. He’s a solid backup at the position, playing at a high level whenever he steps in for Cook, and is only going to cost the team $1.1 million next season.
