With the 2023 NFL draft now over, teams still looking for running back help might turn their attention to a handful of notable veterans.
Dalvin Cook is currently under contract with the Minnesota Vikings, but he has been the subject of trade speculation.
According to a report, the Vikings are considering trading Cook following the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Draft.
MMQB’s Albert Breer reported Saturday that the Miami Dolphins discussed a deal for Cook in March, but they addressed the position in the draft by selecting Texas A&M’s Devon Achane in the third round.
Cook emerged on other teams’ radars when general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah came short of guaranteeing he would be in the Vikings’ plans for 2023.
Cook, who’s coming off his fourth straight Pro Bowl, has a contact that is a problem. He’s set to have a $14.1 million cap hit in 2023. As Breer notes, a reworked contract would be needed to lower those figures and make a trade possible. Trading the four-time Pro Bowler would yield considerable cap savings both before or after June 1.

When the Minnesota Vikings selected DeWayne McBride in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, it seemed like a move that could signal the end of Dalvin Cook’s time in Minnesota.
Cook played college football at Florida State University, where he had a successful career, setting several school records and earning All-American honors in 2016. In 2017, Cook was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the NFL Draft. He quickly became a key player for the team, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2019 and 2020.
The post-draft period will no doubt see a number of NFL veterans finding new homes, on the free agent and trade markets. Cook looks like a prime candidate for that to happen during this offseason.
