The Dallas Cowboys are keen on placing themselves at the apex of professional football again and are playing like a team on a mission, harboring hopes of winning the Super Bowl in February.
While that’s the more immediate future for Jerry Jones and Co., they will have some concerns heading into the offseason, with free agency looming.
The Hunt Could Be On For A New Backup QB
Backup quarterback Cooper Rush will likely be open to negotiating with other teams so Dallas isn’t guaranteed to keep him as he could attract a big-money offer to play for another franchise.
As a result, Baker Mayfield is now being linked with the Cowboys, with the QB also tipped to be on the move in free agency as well.
K.D. Drummond of USA Today is the one whose making such claims, having listed Mayfield as one of the backup QB options for the Cowboys. His list also includes Terry Bridgewater and Taylor Heinicke.
“Cooper Rush played himself into a solid contract this offseason and that money isn’t going to come from a club which has invested $40 million per season in their starter,” Drummond wrote this week. “He’ll get paid by a team looking for a bridge/mentor type to a highly-drafted rookie QB.

“Will Grier is still an option, as he was neck and neck with Rush in camp but didn’t win the job in the preseason. Dallas could still look elsewhere after seeing how important the role is with Rush’s 4-1 stretch.”
Baker Mayfield Has impressed Since Joining The Rams
Since being released by the Carolina Panthers, Mayfield has shown some great form, throwing for 571 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception in three games with the Los Angeles Rams.
Mayfield, who is completing 69 percent of his passes so far, had his best performance for his new team against the Denver Broncos on Christmas Day, when he passed for 230 yards and two TDs on 85 percent pass completion.
