The Dallas Cowboys have locked up one of their core players to a lucrative extension worth nearly $100 million.
According toNFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys have signed star cornerback Trevon Diggs to a five-year extension worth $97 million. The deal can be worth as much as $104 million, Rapoport added.
Diggs was heading into the final season of his rookie contract. But rather than hit the open market or potentially receive the franchise tag, Diggs and the Cowboys managed to take care of business with preseason just around the corner.
The soon-to-be 25-year-old Diggs was drafted in the second round, 51st overall, by the Cowboys back in 2020. He broke out in 2021 by recording a league-leading 11 interceptions (including two pick-sixes) to go along with 21 pass defenses.
Diggs earned a second straight Pro Bowl nod in 2022 after tallying three interceptions and 14 pass defenses, helping Dallas to a second straight 12-win season. Through his first three seasons, Diggs has 17 interceptions and 49 pass defenses.

The Cowboys were unable to reach a long-term deal with star running back Tony Pollard, who will now play the 2023 season under the franchise tag. But getting their star cornerback signed long-term is a tidy piece of business with the regular season now less than two months away.
Dallas will begin their 2023 season with a Week 1 road contest against the New York Giants on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.”
