The NFL Preseason is in full swing, and many of the future stars in the league are getting a look at their new squads. Some, however, aren’t as fortunate, as injuries happen, and some players miss games for other reasons; ask Cowboys’ defender Mazi Smith.
Smith, a first-round pick out of Michigan in 2023, enjoyed a less-than-perfect rookie season, recording 13 tackles and one sack, appearing in all 17 games with America’s team. The rookie defensive lineman only stood in 4.73 percent of snaps.
While Smith may be looking to earn a more prominent role in the Cowboys’ defense this season, his recent hospitalization didn’t aid him in making any progress, as he missed the team’s preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to a report from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the 23-year-old suffered a severe allergic reaction to peanuts on the team bus. However, Smith is reportedly feeling better and was back at practice on Monday.

Dallas bench boss Mike McCarthy addressed the situation during his media availability after the match-up, stating that “[Smith is] doing much better today than he was yesterday,” adding “he’s progressing very well.”

McCarthy was also asked if it was a scary situation. He responded by saying, “I was passing him as he was coming off,” adding, “Those things are always serious when you have an allergic reaction like that.” That is a reasonable response from the head coach.
Smith looks to make a complete comeback as the Cowboys are set to face off against the Chargers on Sunday, and if all goes well for the 2023 first-round selection, we could see him more often in 2024.
