Could Brett Maher’s days be numbered?
The Cowboys took out an insurance policy of sorts back in January when they signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad after Brett Maher missed an NFL-record four PAT attempts in the wild-card round of the postseason.
Just ahead of free agency, the team is now doing the same after signing Vizcaino to the active roster, which solidifies the front office’s earlier position that they were ready to go “back to the drawing board” at kicker.
Maher kept his job after his bad performance against the Bucs. He was lucky the team was beating them so badly that his kicks meant nothing to the final score. Maher made two field goal attempts against San Francisco in the divisional round but had his lone PAT try blocked.
Maher is now set to become a free agent, and it has been assumed that the Cowboys would move on.
Vizcaino first entered the league in 2019 and has made 11 career field goals on 12 total attempts, and 15 of 20 extra-point tries over four NFL seasons. He converted 100% of his kicks in 2022, going 2 for 2 on field goals and 3 for 3 on extra points.
He has bounced around with eight different teams.
