Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have been trying to hammer out a long term deal since before the 2019 season even began. The deadline to do so came and went at 4 p.m. ET on July 15th and they could not get it done in time.
As a result, Prescott will play for $31.4 million on the franchise tag in 2020, with the team being able to tag him yet again after the year is up.
One would think that Dak is upset that nothing could get done after putting up career numbers in 2019. If he is upset, he isn’t showing it to the media.
“I’m a Cowboy and couldn’t be happier,” Dak Prescott told USA TODAY last night after the deadline. “I look forward to working along Coach McCarthy, the staff, and my teammates to be the best team we can be in pursuit to our goal of a Super Bowl.” And so, as he did last year, the former Mississippi State star is betting on himself this fall.
The major hangup between the two sides over the last few months has been the number of years, with the franchise wanting a 5-year deal, while Dak only wanted 4 years.
The 26-year-old was second in the league last year with 4,902 passing yards and 30 touchdowns against 11 interceptions last season.
