Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has revealed one of the team’s linebackers is done for the season due to a neck injury.
Leighton Vander Esch won’t play another down in 2023 after hurting his neck against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5 and it’s rumored that his career could be over as a result.
Speaking to 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Jones refused to address the speculation over possible retirement but did confirm that the player won’t be returning this season.
“It’s a very significant loss for us,” Jones said, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “We just wish him well.”
Vander Esch has a history of neck problems dating back to 2018 when he was still a draft prospect. A number of teams were reported to have taken him off their boards. This latest injury is one of a few he has experienced since going pro and it’s believed that he could decide to quit football this time around.
The LB has made $16.6 million in the NFL and might be tempted to walk away after this recent setback.
