The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly made a decision on Mike McCarthy’s long-term future as their head coach.
Owner Jerry Jones opted to keep McCarthy on despite the team’s shocking and embarrassing first-round playoff exit last weekend, expressing confidence in the coach’s ability to lead the team.
However, Jones doesn’t intend to have McCarthy remain in charge past the end of his current contract, which expires at the end of next season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports:
“Mike McCarthy is not expected to receive any sort of extension from the Dallas Cowboys and will coach the 2024 season on an expiring contract, league sources told ESPN.
“Ever since Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced this week that McCarthy would return in 2024, there have been questions about whether McCarthy’s contract could be adjusted in some way — even something as simple as having one more year tacked on.
“The answer, simply enough, is no. Jones says he believes that a person in the last year of a contract is challenged in a different way, and it often can bring out the best in people — which he is banking on happening in 2024 with McCarthy.”
It appears McCarthy’s days in charge of the Cowboys are specifically numbered and he will not be returning as head coach unless he does something extraordinary, like maybe win the Super Bowl?
