A blockbuster trade proposal has the Seattle Seahawks landing one of the game’s top young defensive players.
In a surprise move, the Washington Commanders announced last month that they were declining the fifth-year option on 2020 No. 2 overall pick Chase Young. The Commanders now risk losing Young for nothing in free agency next year. Otherwise, they’ll have to be ready to pay him top-of-the-market price if he turns in a strong year.
Another option? The Commanders could look to trade Young before or during the 2023 season. And if Washington shops Young, there will be no shortage of teams interested in his services.
At Bleacher Report, Alex Kaye proposed a massive trade idea in which the Commanders send Young to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2024 second plus a 2025 conditional second-round draft choice:
“The Seattle Seahawks were a popular candidate in mock drafts to address their edge-rushing needs with at least one of their two first-round picks this year. While they ultimately decided against securing a pass-rusher until Day 2, when they selected Derick Hall at No. 37 overall, the team still needs another good edge defender to push it over the top.
If the Seahawks were willing to ship Washington a second-rounder in 2024 and a conditional pick the following year that would be another second-rounder if Young hits a certain playing-time threshold in 2023, it should be enough for the Commanders to part ways with a player they may not even be able to afford when he hits the open market next spring. The move would be contingent on Seattle clearing some cap space as well, a path the Seahawks should have no issue exploring given Young’s potential.”
The Seahawks brought back old friend Jarran Reed and signed veteran Dre’Mont Jones to bolster their defensive line. They also brought back Bobby Wagner following his one-year stint with the Los Angeles Rams, adding more star power to the defense.
Adding an explosive pass rush specialist like Young could do wonders for a Seattle team that hasn’t reached the NFC Championship Game since the 2014 season. But the Commanders are most likely to see how Young fares early in the season before they consider trading him.

If he hits the trade block, however, the Seahawks should definitely be among the interested clubs.
