A blockbuster trade idea has the Washington Commanders sending star pass rusher Chase Young to an up-and-coming team in the NFC.
In a surprise move, the Commanders declined the fifth-year option on Young’s rookie contract. As such, the Commanders will risk losing him for nothing in 2024 free agency. They’ll also have the option to extend Young long-term or use the franchise tag to keep him under control for one more year.
Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton proposed an intriguing blockbuster trade scenario that would see the Commanders send Young to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2024 second-round draft pick:
“Even though Chicago traded (Khalil) Mack two years ago when Ryan Poles took over the general manager position, Young is much younger (24 years old), and the Bears can absorb his contract with $32.6 million in cap space.
Moreover, the Bears finished the 2022 term with the fewest sacks (20) and the second-lowest pressure rate (15.9 percent). They need pass-rushing help up front.”
The Bears sent away Robert Quinn and Roquan Smith, two key members of their front seven, ahead of last year’s trade deadline. With a plethora of cap space in free agency, GM Ryan Poles signed ex-Buffalo Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and former Philadelphia Eagles standout linebacker T.J. Edwards.
But adding a player of Young’s caliber would go a long way in helping this Chicago defense improve after finishing last in scoring (27.2 points per game). Not to mention that it was actually safety Jaquan Brisker who led the team in sacks with four last season.
