The Indianapolis Colts have requested interviews for two of the top assistant coaches in the league for their vacant head coaching position.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts have requested permission to speak with both San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and New York Giants defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale.
The Colts fired Frank Reich, their head coach since 2018,after a 3-5-1 start. Owner Jim Irsay curiously hired ESPN analyst and former Colts center Jeff Saturday as the interim HC, even though the latter had no prior NFL head coaching experience.
Indianapolis finished 1-7 under Saturday, so it’s hard to envision Irsay and GM Chris Ballard bringing him back for another season. 2022 marked the Colts’ worst season since the 2017 campaign, when they finished with a 4-12 record.
Martindale and Ryans coordinated two of the NFL’s elite defensive units this season, and it only feels like a matter of time until both of them become NFL head coaches.
