Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich reportedly apologized to owner Jim Irsay following the end of the 2021 season after Carson Wentz did not pan out the way he had hoped.
According to Zak Keefer of The Athletic, Reich apologized to Irsay after he was the main one to lobby to get the 2017 Pro Bowler with the idea he “could resurrect Wentz’s stalled career and solve the Colts’ quarterback conundrum.”
On Wednesday, the team traded Wentz to the Washington Commanders.
According to Keefer, Wentz attempted to meet with Irsay to “clear the air” regarding his future with the team, but that meeting got declined because he was out of town. They would eventually have that conversation.
Keefer wrote that Indianapolis “simply didn’t trust him to be the franchise quarterback moving forward.”
Reich and Wentz spent two years together in Philadelphia, with the former serving as the Eagles offensive coordinator.
Wentz career in Indy pretty much ended after he failed to deliver a single victory from the final two weeks of the regular season, when the Colts fell out of the AFC playoff picture. He threw for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while losing one fumble as Indy suffered back-to-back losses.

The Commanders are the next team betting on Wentz to get them to a higher level.
