Colin Kaepernick certainly had a message he wanted to get out and he made sure to deliver it on the fourth of July.
The former NFL star and activist took to Twitter on Saturday and shared a video of actor James Earl Jones reciting Frederick Douglass’s historic speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” with Kaepernick calling the holiday a “celebration of white supremacy.”
The video shows images of the Declaration of Independence, slaves, Klu Klux Klan members, lynchings and police brutality: “Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us?”
Kaepernick said: “Black ppl have been dehumanized, brutalized, criminalized + terrorized by America for centuries, & are expected to join your commemoration of ‘independence’, while you enslaved our ancestors,” he wrote. “We reject your celebration of white supremacy & look forward to liberation for all.”
After being out of the league since the end of the 2016 season, Kaepernick looks to get a fresh start after renewed interest in him by multiple teams.
