Colin Kaepernick is once again putting his money to good use. The former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist is paying for the autopsy of a man who died in an Atlanta jail under mysterious circumstances, TMZ reports.
The autopsy will be for LaShawn Thompson, a 35-year-old man who died in his Fulton County Jail cell in September 2022 under mysterious circumstances. The official autopsy came back “undetermined,” and Thompson’s family believes that the facility’s unsanitary conditions led to his death.
After Kaepernick heard about the death of 35-year-old LaShawn Thompson, he reached out to contact the family’s attorney Ben Crump to help fund an independent autopsy.
Thompson was arrested in 2022 in connection with a misdemeanor simple battery case. After his death, his family released photos that show the state of the cell, and his body as he was found. According to the coroner, there were bugs and bug bites all over his body. The cell itself was found to have a “severe” infestation.
The family is seeking an explanation, and for sweeping changes to be made to the condition of the Fulton County Jail cells.
Throughout his career, Kaepernick was known for his strong arm and his ability to make plays with his legs. He was also known for his activism which made him a trending topic during the 2016 season.
