August 2016 will always be a date that lives in the memory of football fans as Colin Kaepernick remained seated as other players stand to observe the national anthem. This simple action, which Kaepernick makes no attempt to broadcast to the public, gives rise to a controversy that will bring to light the racial tensions within American sports, determine the fate of Kaepernick’s football career and reverberate across the sporting world for years to come.
He would soon go from sitting to kneeling and the Nation would explode.
This week, Nesa, the girlfriend of Colin Kaepernick, would take to her Instagram and posted a touching tribute to the first time the former NFL quarterback would kneel during the playing of the National Anthem.
“Seven years ago this day, history witnessed a defining moment when Colin began protesting systemic racism specifically police terrorism against Black people,” she wrote on Instagram. “This simple, yet symbolic bold act helped spread a nationwide and global conversation about racial injustice and police brutality. Despite backlash, criticism, and loss of employment with the league, he stood on his commitment to shedding light on the need for significant change.
“Colin stands on the shoulders of Black freedom fighters throughout history including Paul Robeson, Muhammad Ali, and Angela Davis who made significant sacrifices to ensure Black and Brown communities worldwide can work toward a life without the burden of systemic oppression.”
The former San Francisco 49ers star has remained in shape and continues to work out with former and current NFL wide receivers with the hope of returning to the league in the near future. Kaepernick recently worked out with guys like Kendrick Bourne and CeeDee Lamb up at the Nike world headquarters in Oregon.
The chances are slim, but Kaepernick is trying to leave that door open.

The former 49ers quarterback, who protested the police brutality of minorities by kneeling during the national anthem, has gone unsigned since parting ways with the 49ers following the 2016 season.
During his time in San Francisco, Kaepernick thrived under Jim Harbaugh, going 25-14 as a starter while also leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012 and the NFC Championship in 2013.
