Colin Kaepernick did not have a game to prepare for on Thanksgiving, but he was quite busy on this day. On Thursday, the free agent quarterback participated in an “Unthanksgiving Day” event on Alcatraz Island which is where native Americans activists gather every Thanksgiving to commemorate “indigenous resistance.”
Kaepernick shared a video on Twitter where he blasted the United States government for stealing land.
“Spent the morning at the Indigenous People’s Sunrise Ceremony on the 50 year anniversary of the Occupation of Alcatraz,” Kaepernick wrote in a tweet that also had a video of him attending the event. “The US government has stolen over 1.5 billion acres of land from Indigenous people. Thank you to my Indigenous family, I’m with you today and always.”
The event is intended to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Native Americans occupying the famous island, which previously served as the site of a federal prison.
Kaepernick also attended the event in 2017.

On his Twitter account, Kaepernick retweeted an article from the Washington Post that indicated Thanksgiving was racist.
“Antebellum campaigns to establish Thanksgiving as nat’l holiday grew up alongside colonizationist efforts to remove free Black people from U.S. Nationalization advocates mobilized white fears of Black equality to build support for holiday,” he said in the post retweeted by Kaepernick.
Kaepernick has been out of the league since 2016 when he caused major controversy over his kneeling during the National Anthem. He recently held a workout that was attended by several NFL scouts and reps, with him dropping a hype video days after to show him launching passes to receivers at Charles Drew High School.
So far, no team has contacted his reps about a potential signing.
