The New England Patriots are going to tank the 2020 season, at least according to Colin Cowherd.
The New England Patriots don’t seem to be interested in going for soon-to-be available players like cam Newton and Andy Dalton after future Hall of Fame quarterback and 20 year Patriots veteran Tom Brady left via free agency and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They currently have Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer in the mix for the starting position.
That is apparently being done by design and Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd thinks there is a larger plan behind the scenes.
“I think what they’re going to do…do what Miami did last year,” Cowherd said. “Create a culture or maintain it, not be very good at quarterback, playing hard and playing to win but losing. Knowing you’re going to lose. The Patriots,… Brady is gone, but it is a 23 million dollar dead money hit. Andy Dalton was on the market and he is better than Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. Why doesn’t New England go after Andy Dalton? It’s tanking for Trevor Lawrence.
“They’re not going to call it tanking. Miami played hard, they created a culture. They won five of their last nine games in Miami. But they knew ultimately…they started moving pieces, moving guys, creating a younger team…you don’t have to win to create a culture. If you look at New England, Belichick looks at his schedule, for the first time ever in New England, it’s ranked as the toughest in the NFL. Again, why aren’t they going after Andy Dalton? Ask yourself. How many teams next year are going to be bad? By and large New England can play hard, accumulate draft picks, lose close games, not very good at quarterback, not very good weapons…they go 6-10, maintain their culture. Very interesting. The Patriots were never interested in Andy Dalton, that tells me they have a plan.”
Barring some unforeseen injury in 2020, Lawrence is expected to be the most touted QB coming out of college.
