The New York Giants are releasing a big-name wide receiver ahead of Tuesday’s 4 PM deadline.
Cuts have been rife around the NFL today, with teams required to trim their rosters down to 53 men, and Cole Beasley is among players who have received some bad news. According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, the wideout is expected to re-sign with the team as he is a vested veteran and does not have to go through waivers.
Beasley, who suffered a leg injury during the offseason, could start the season on the Giants’ practice squad in a bid to ensure he is fully healthy, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Players who have been in the NFL for more than four seasons, or vested veterans, are not subject to waivers until October’s trade deadline.
The Giants would do well to bring Beasley back as he has experience which could help younger receivers such as Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt. He’s also familiar with Brian Daboll’s offense as he was with the Buffalo Bills back when the NY head coach was the offensive coordinator there.
Still, whether the WR joins the practice squad or makes it to the 53-man roster remains to be seen.
