The Cleveland Browns have made a big roster move at quarterback ahead of Sunday’s pivotal Week 13 road game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that Joe Flacco is now the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Dorion Thompson-Robinson. The rookie remains in concussion protocol, and Flacco will get the start on Sunday if Thompson-Robinson isn’t cleared to play.
“Big, strong arm. Obviously, he can make every throw,” Stefanski said, via ESPN’s Jake Trotter. “He’s done a very nice job in the meeting room, getting to know his teammates, getting to know the system. He’s done a nice job.”
Flacco is no stranger to Cleveland. He was the Baltimore Ravens starting quarterback from 2008 to 2018 and has faced the AFC North club 21 times in his career. Flacco went 18-3 in those contests against the Browns, throwing for 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Two weeks ago, Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson was ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury that required surgery. P.J. Walker made two starts in place of an injured Watson, with Thompson-Robinson making three starts.
With the No. 1 defense in football, the Browns are sitting in a playoff spot at 7-4 and are in position to lock down their second playoff berth in four years under Stefanski. Of course, the season could immediately go sideways if the Browns’ quarterback play doesn’t improve with a daunting schedule ahead.
