We’ve already heard reports that Deshaun Watson is down to two teams, the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons, as he and the Texans determine a final trade partner.
The Saints were believed to be the leaders at this point, with the Falcons still garnering consideration. Meanwhile, the Panthers and Browns were believed to be out of it.
And at least one of those two teams has made it official, as the Browns have confirmed that they’ve been told by Watson and the Texans that they are no longer in the running.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns have been given the bad news, and now they appear to be crawling back to their current quarterback with their tail between their legs. Based on the report, Cleveland is saying they’re content with Baker Mayfield.
Awkward! Especially after it was reported yesterday by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that the Browns were planning to move on from Mayfield, regardless of what happens with Watson. Mort added that Cleveland was looking for “an adult” at quarterback.

It’s amazing how things can change in seconds during the NFL season. The Browns have gone from calling Baker Mayfield a child, to calling him their starting quarterback less than 24 hours later. That clearly won’t sit well with the 2018 first overall pick.
It will be interesting to see how Mayfield reacts to all of this. He can’t be happy about how things have gone. And don’t completely rule out the possibility of the Browns two-timing Mayfield and bringing in another quarterback like Jimmy Garoppolo to replace him, despite their supposed ‘recommitment’ to Baker.
One thing’s for sure. This saga is clearly not over, even if the Browns’ chances of getting Watson are.
