Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner Johnson is reported to have been carted off from practice on Monday.
According to Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman, the former Philadelphia Eagles defensive star went down with a right leg injury in what was his first training camp with the team and had to be comforted by teammates as he appeared to be upset.
“Veteran #Lions DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson went down with a right leg injury Monday & was carted off the field,” Twentyman reported. “He was visibly upset and team captains Buggs and Goff made it a point to go comfort him. Hoping for better news than it looked.”
The 25-year-old joined the Lions on a one-year deal in the offseason following a campaign in which he helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl. Detroit acquired him with the aim of making him their top nickel back for 2023.
They also signed cornerbacks Emmanuel Mosely and Cam Sutton in free agency, but the former is on the PUP list after tearing his ACL while with the San Francisco 49ers last season.
