The Cincinnati Bengals have waived a veteran wide receiver following their frustrating Week 13 loss to the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers.
On Monday, the Cincinnati Bengals announced that wide receiver Trenton Irwin has been waived. They also signed 24-year-old linebacker Shaka Heyward, the cousin of Pittsburgh Steelers star defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, to the active roster.
Irwin entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford in 2019, signing with the Miami Dolphins. He was released ahead of the regular season and signed with the Bengals soon after.
The 28-year-old Irwin would spend portions of the next six seasons on the Cincinnati Bengals’ roster, appearing in all three postseason games during their run to the 2022 AFC Championship Game.

Irwin finishes his tenure as a Bengal with 46 catches for 601 yards and five touchdowns. Given his decent production as a complementary piece for the Joe Burrow-led Bengals offense, Irwin shouldn’t have to wait too long to land another NFL contract.
Cincinnati Bengals’ Playoff Hopes Ended With Loss To Steelers
The Bengals’ 44-38 loss to the Steelers at home all but ended their chances of qualifying for the postseason. Cincy would have to win out to have any chance, but 9-8 isn’t going to be enough with each AFC wild-card team on pace to finish with double-digit wins.
