The San Francisco 49ers received some great news on Tuesday regarding injured running back Christian McCaffrey.
Per a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCaffrey avoided a serious injury and could even play in Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings next Monday. The All-Pro back suffered an oblique/rib injury in the club’s Week 6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
The 49ers suffered their first defeat of the season to the Browns, who were down to third-string quarterback P.J. Walker. Rookie kicker Jake Moody missed a game-winning field goal in the waning seconds, and Cleveland narrowly escaped with a 19-17 record.
The loss wasn’t the 49ers’ greatest concern on Sunday, though. Aside from McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) and offensive lineman Trent Williams (ankle) were all injured in the loss.
But Williams and Samuel also avoided long-term injuries and could return for the Week 7 tilt in Minnesota, the report added.
McCaffrey has been one of the NFL’s most explosive players thus far in the 2023 season, recording 553 rushing yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 23 receptions for 177 yards and a pair of receiving scores.

San Fran entered Week 6 as one of the league’s remaining two undefeated teams, along with the Philadelphia Eagles. But Philly also suffered a stunning upset on Sunday, losing 20-14 to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
The Vikings are coming off a 19-13 road win against the Chicago Bears that improved their record to 2-4. Monday will mark their first meeting since Week 12 of the 2021 season, which San Fran won 34-26.
