If the Kansas City Chiefs don’t pay up star defensive tackle Chris Jones soon, he’s willing to sit out a large portion of the 2023 season.
A fan asked Jones on X (formerly known as Twitter), when he would return to the organization. Jones responded with “Week 8”, which is when the Chiefs travel to Mile High City for a late afternoon game against the Denver Broncos:
The Arrowhead Live account responded to Jones with, “Thatd’ be a hefty tab”, to which the two-time Super Bowl champion simply with, ” I can afford it”.

In the 2020 offseason, the Chiefs signed their defensive MVP to a four-year extension worth $80 million. The 29-year-old Jones, who tied a career high with 15.5 sacks last year, is entering the final season of his contract.
Since breaking into the NFL as a rookie in 2016, Jones has racked up 65 sacks, 33 pass defenses, 12 forced fumbles and two interceptions in 107 games. Jones had two sacks in the Chiefs’ three playoff games last season, helping the franchise to a second Super Bowl championship in four years.
If Jones is indeed planning to hold out until Week 8, that means he’d miss games against the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers.
Kansas City will host Detroit in the annual NFL Kickoff Game on Thurs, Sept. 7.
