One of the key members of the Kansas City Chiefs’ last two Super Bowl championship team is officially holding out.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, star defensive tackle skipped the team’s first day of training camp as he continues to hold out hope for a new contract. Schefter added that Jones and the reigning Super Bowl champions are “far apart” on an extension.
In the 2020 offseason, Jones and the Chiefs agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $85 million. This came just a few months after Jones helped Kansas City to a Super Bowl 54 championship.
The Chiefs haven’t been shy in letting key stars go if their contract demands are too high (see Tyreek Hill and Orlando Brown Jr). But it’s hard to envision this team being better without Jones down the road, given his value to that defense.
Jones has recorded at least nine sacks in four of the last five seasons, including 15.5 (career bests to date) in the 2019 and 2022 seasons. The 6-foot-6 Jones had two sacks in three playoff games last season, helping the Chiefs to a second Super Bowl title in four years.

For his career, the 29-year-old Jones has 65 sacks and 12 forced fumbles. He finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season, behind Dallas Cowboys’ linebacker Micah Parsons and San Francisco 49ers’ defensive end and award winner Nick Bosa.
