The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs have waived a veteran wide receiver and former highly-touted first-round pick.
Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Chiefs waived veteran wideout John Ross from the reserved/retired list. The 28-year-old last played for the New York Giants in the 2021 season, and Garafolo added that he’s hoping to play in the NFL again.
Ross turned heads at the 2017 Combine when he set the record for the fastest 40-yard dash time at 4.22 seconds. This broke the record that former Tennessee Titans star running back Chris Johnson had set nine years earlier (4.24 seconds).
The Cincinnati Bengals drafted the Washington product in the first round (ninth overall) in 2017. Cincinnati had hoped that Ross would form a dynamic duo alongside perennial Pro Bowler A.J. Green and help Andy Dalton regain his star-like form after a forgettable 2016 season.
Unfortunately, injuries derailed Ross’ four-year run with the Bengals, as he appeared in just 27 of a possible 64 games. He never played more than 13 games in a single season with the Bengals, finishing with only 51 catches for 733 yards and 10 touchdowns during his tenure with the AFC North club.
Ross got a fresh start with the New York Giants in 2021 but caught only 11 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown in 10 game appearances.
