The Kansas City Chiefs may be without Patrick Mahomes’ best offensive weapon for Thursday night’s season opener against the Detroit Lions.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid stated that tight end Travis Kelce is now questionable for Thursday after hyper-extending his knee in practice on Tuesday.
This is certainly a key storyline to follow now, because Kelce’s absence would make things that much harder for Kansas City against a revamped Detroit secondary. The Chiefs lost two other key pass-catchers from last year’s Super Bowl team, Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster, in free agency.
If Kelce is out, Mahomes will be reliant on Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore and Rashee Rice in the passing game. Kelce’s absence could also prompt the Lions to lean a lot more on the Isiah Pacheco-led ground game, too.
Kelce has been remarkably durable during his NFL career, playing at least 15 games every year since 2014. He has played every regular season game six times, too.
The future Hall of Famer racked up 110 receptions for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, helping the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl championship in four years. For his career, Kelce has 814 receptions for 10,344 yards and 69 touchdowns.
