Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is expected to leave the team in the wake of their Super Bowl win, with the Washington Commanders thought to be his next destination.
Bieniemy has helped the Chiefs win two Super Bowls since his appointment in 2018 but has struggled to land a head coaching job despite being one of the best OCs in the league. A move to Washington would likely put him on the path of least resistance.
Should Bieniemy opt to leave, the Chiefs will look to replace him with Matt Nagy. That is according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who reports that the former Chicago Bears head coach is the top candidate to fill in if the position is vacated this offseason.
The Chiefs wouldn’t have much work to do on such a front as Nagy already works for them. He spent last season with the team as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach so they would be promoting from within.
The 44-year-old is in his second stint with Kansas City, having joined them as a QB coach in 2013 when Andy Reid took over as head coach. He was the team’s offensive coordinator during the 2016-17 season before he left to coach the Bears.
His spell in Chicago was not at all successful but Nagy can boast having helped KC win the Super Bowl this year.
