It appears the Kansas City Chiefs will be without two of their most important players when they open the 2023 NFL season against the Detroit Lions this Thursday night.
As defensive tackle Chris Jones continues his holdout, the Chiefs have also been hit with a Travis Kelce worry as the tight end sustained a knee injury in practice, with reports noting he suffered a hyperextension on Tuesday.
Travis’s brother, Jason Kelce, delivered a hopeful update on Wednesday, claiming the two-time Super Bowl winner would be likely to play as there was no structural damage.
On Thursday morning, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the Chiefs would be holding a workout specifically geared towards determining whether Kelce could play in the first game of the team’s title defense. Based on their latest announced move, we are left to surmise he might be unavailable.
Ian Rapoport, another NFL Network insider, has revealed that Kansas City elevated tight end Matt Bushman from the practice squad as insurance. This suggests that, as of Thursday afternoon, Kelce’s status was still unknown.
The Chiefs will host the Lions at their Arrowhead Stadium tonight at 8:20 PM.
