The Kansas City Chiefs have pulled off another brilliant organizational move after winning the Super Bowl last month.
KC has become one of the best-run franchises in the NFL over the last few years, matching their excellence on the field with an impressive business structure. They proved it again this week by reworking a sum initially set for their best player, converting it into cap space.
According to Field Yates, the Chiefs have restructured superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract in a move that should help them take better advantage of the current free agency period.
The defending Super Bowl champions are said to have created $9.6 million in cap space by turning $12 million of Mahomes’ 2023 roster bonus into a signing bonus.
“The Chiefs have converted $12M of QB Patrick Mahomes’ 2023 roster bonus into a signing bonus, creating $9.6M in cap space, per source. More flexibility for the champs throughout free agency,” Yates noted.
Mahomes deal is already as team-friendly as it gets for a player of his caliber but the Chiefs have still found a way to make it work for them.

Now. we’ll just have to wait and see how they use that cap space. The QB will expect some new receiving talent around him heading into the 2023/24 campaign. JuJu Smith-Schuster is no longer around, having signed a deal with the New England Patriots while Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson could be on their way out as well.
Adam Thielen is an option following his release from the Minnesota Vikings earlier this month. The Chiefs are also reported to be among teams interested in signing Odell Beckham Jr.
