A Kansas City Chiefs player has revealed where he hid during the horrific incident that took place after their Super Bowl victory parade on Wednesday.
While players, coaches, and staff are reported to have left the area before the mass shooting incident that left one dead and 22 injured, offensive lineman Trey Smith has said he and his teammates were still around when gunfire broke out near Union Station.
The OL told GMA he and his teammates were going offstage when police and security warned them of an ongoing “life and death situation.” He revealed they were led to a closet, and he snatched a small kid who appeared to be in distress.
“Right before I run in there, there’s a little kid in front of me so I just grabbed him and yanked him up and said, ‘You’re hopping in here with me, buddy,'” he said. “I don’t know how many people were in the closet, maybe 20-plus.”
Smith praised Chiefs long snapper James Winchester, who “was very instrumental in helping keep people calm.”
“This little boy was with his father. He was a little hysterical. He just panicked. He was scared. He doesn’t know what’s going on,” he added. “I had the WWE belt the entire parade and I was thinking, what can I do to help him out? I just handed him the belt and said, ‘Hey buddy, you’re the champion. No one is gonna hurt you. No one’s gonna hurt you, man. We got your back.'”
