Even just moments after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a successful Super Bowl title defense, Patrick Mahomes already had his eyes dead set on next season.
Mahomes led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl championship in five years after throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime of Super Bowl 58 against the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs also secured the first NFL repeat since the 2003 and ’04 New England Patriots.
While Mahomes was celebrating the big win on the field, “Inside the NFL” cameras caught the 28-year-old voicing his desire to complete the “three-peat” next year.
“Hey, we’re not done, dog,” Mahomes said. “I want three. No one’s ever got three…I want back to back to back.”
Indeed, no NFL team has ever completed a “three-peat” in the Super Bowl era. The Green Bay Packers won three straight NFL championships from 1929 to 1931, but there was no postseason tournament to crown the league winner at the time.
The Miami Dolphins (1971 to ’73), Buffalo Bills (1990 to ’93) and New England Patriots (2016 to ’18) are the only NFL teams to have ever played in three straight Super Bowls. The ’71 Dolphins lost in the Super Bowl before winning back-to-back Lombardi Trophies, while the Bills of course lost all four big game appearances.

The Patriots won it all in the 2016 and 2018 seasons, but their repeat in the 2017 season was foiled by Nick Foles’ Philadelphia Eagles. As such, the dynastic Patriots also failed to secure the first Super Bowl three-peat.
If there’s one team that is well-suited to pull off a three-peat, however, it’s none other than the Mahomes-led Chiefs.
