Deshaun Watson appears to be a lightning rod for controversy wherever he goes right now. It’s no surprise, either, seeing as how he’s currently facing 22 sexual assault lawsuits.
The Cleveland Browns didn’t seem to mind taking on the troubled quarterback when they gave up three first-round picks, and then some, to the Houston Texans for his services. And they weren’t afraid to ramp up the sketchiness of their transaction when they handed him a very questionable contract that will help him save a ton of money if he’s suspended in 2022 for his off-the-field actions.
Watson’s new contract, which pays him a base salary of only $1-million in 2022 (so he’ll only lose $55,555 per game he’s suspended), rubbed many people the wrong way. Among them was Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz, who took to Twitter to sound off on what he described as a “slimy and wrong” contract:

That last part is especially troubling, as it shows just how far NFL teams are willing to go in order to secure top-level talent — even if it means selling their souls to the devil.
The Browns could have simply given Watson a normal contract and told him that if he were to get suspended (which you’d think would imply he’s guilty of the accusations), he’s have to face the music. Rather, they appear to be doing their part to protect him from whatever justifiable punishments he might fact.
It’s no wonder some Browns fans aren’t happy about all of this.
