Patrick Mahomes put on an MVP performance at Super Bowl 57 on Sunday, firing the Kansas City Chiefs to an impressive win over the Philadelphia Eagles. But he would have been forgiven for deciding to sit out after he hurt his ankle during the game.
The quarterback sustained the initial injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round and there were fears he could miss the AFC Championship fixture against the Cincinnati Bengals.
After making an important scramble that ultimately saw the Bengals off, Mahomes had two weeks to rest and work on his fitness. But a low tackle from linebacker T.J. Edwards during Sunday’s contest left him grounded in pain as the joint was twisted again.
Mahomes, though, was able to shake the injury off and finish the game, even making a key run to get a first down late in the fourth quarter.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who has also been credited with the win as he called two easy touchdown plays on the night, discussed the injury with reporters after the game (H/T ProFootballTalk).
I knew it was pretty bad when he got up limping. But I knew it wasn’t going to be bad enough where he pulled himself off the field. That’s just Pat. That’s who he is since Day One. He is as competitive as they come and he’s not going to ever pull himself out of a situation with his team, through the good and the bad,” Bieniemy said.
At the time, I really wasn’t concerned. I knew that he would just find a way to walk it off. If we were to pull him off, I would have had to fight him, and he would’ve probably fought me. It wasn’t even worth entertaining, what was taking place. What a great person. What a great performance. I just wish everybody could have his mindset and determination.
