With the Dallas Cowboys trading for Houston Texans WR Brandin Cooks, the attention has shifted from the NFL’s free agency period back to the trade market.
Arizona Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins has been the subject of trade rumors for weeks, but nothing has materialized since the Cardinals seem to be asking for a ton to unload him. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported this week that trade talks surrounding Hopkins are “ramping up” among interested teams. Could the Kansas City Chiefs be among the interested parties?
According to a report by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Kansas City Chiefs have shown interest in not only Hopkins but also free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs won their second Super Bowl title in four seasons last year despite featuring a wide receiver room that lacked a big-name superstar after trading Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins.
The Chiefs have a need at the wide receiver position after losing JuJu Smith-Schuster to the New England Patriots.
The Chiefs are projected to have around $9.5 million in salary cap space available. That number would not be enough to get Hopkins and Odell. They’d have to work something out with Hopkins to lower his number to get him and Odell. That may only be able to get one of the WRs.
