The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl in 2023, but they lost their backup quarterback moments after, with Chad Henne announcing his retirement even before the celebrations really kicked in.
The Chiefs should be in the market for another QB to play understudy to Patrick Mahomes and, according to the bookies, they’re the top landing spot for free-agent signal-caller Carson Wentz.
The Washington Commanders released Wentz on Monday and have saved $26 million in cap space as a result. They’re now set to have second-year QB Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke fight for the starting spot next summer.
A move for Wentz could make sense for the Chiefs. While he’s as inconsistent as they come, Wentz is still a Super Bowl winner, as well as a former All-Pro and Pro Bowl player who has been in the MVP conversation.
Playing second fiddle to the best QB in the league could do him a world of good and a move to KC might be just the thing he needs to get his career back on track.
Of course, he might not want to do that, he’s all the things mentioned above after all. But, if he’s willing to put his ego aside and join the Chiefs on a cheap deal, he could end up with another Super Bowl win. Even more importantly, Andy Reid could turn him into a desirable acquisition again.
