Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo displayed remarkable class after helping his team to a third Super Bowl championship in five years.
Appearing on “The Season with Peter Schrager” podcast, Spagnuolo stated that he “tracked down” Brock Purdy’s number after the Chiefs outlasted the San Francisco 49ers in overtime of Super Bowl 58.
“Spags” simply wanted to take the time to let Purdy know that he thinks highly of the second-year quarterback, as a player and as a person:
“I’ll be honest with you. I just texted Brock the other day. I tried to track down his number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him. What a terrific game he played. He’s such a quality guy, strong Christian man, and I respect all of that.”
Spagnuolo is the only offensive or defensive coordinator in history to win a Super Bowl with two different franchises. He won his first ring with the New York Giants in 2007, when they upset Tom Brady and the previously undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl 42.
Since replacing Bob Sutton as the Chiefs’ DC in 2019, Spagnuolo has helped Kansas City to four Super Bowl appearances and three championships. This season, they became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the 2003 and ’04 New England Patriots.

Purdy himself had a superb performance in the 25-22 loss to Kansas City, completing 23 passes for 255 yards and one touchdown to go along with 12 rushing yards. Unfortunately for Purdy, the quarterback on the other sideline was none other than Patrick Mahomes.
