Clyde Edwards-Helaire is going to watch this play and wish he did something differently because it could’ve changed the outcome of the game.
Edwards-Helaire rushed six times for 22 yards and secured his only target for seven yards in the Chiefs’ 21-20 loss to the Lions on Thursday. However, one rushing play could’ve had his numbers so much better and likely could’ve added a touchdown if he put on a move or two on the defense backs.
The below play shows the Chiefs running back rushing to his right with him not realizing how open the left side had opened up for him. He gained a few yards, but it could’ve been so much better if he had just turned his head.
That seriously could’ve been a backbreaker for the Lions.
Edwards-Helaire trailed backfield mate Isiah Pacheco by two carries, and neither back was able to make any real nose against what appears to be an improved Lions run defense. The 24-year-old seems set to operate in a complementary role to Pacheco this season.
It will be interesting to see how the timeshare on early downs continues to evolve during a Week 2 road matchup against the Jaguars a week from Sunday. He might be called on to do more since Travis Kelce is not a sure thing to play during that game.
