The Chicago Bears boasted the best rushing offense in 2022 but could become one of the top destinations for one of the best running backs set to be on the market in the offseason. That is if they choose not to bring David Montgomery back.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has published a list of the best players poised to become free agents at the end of the season who will be playing this weekend and pointed to New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley as one to watch.
According to Knox, Chicago could be one of Barkley’s two preferred landing spots should the Giants allow him to hit the free-agent market.
“Chicago has a promising signal-caller in Justin Fields, but it hasn’t done a great job of surrounding him with talent,” the journo wrote on Friday. “Barkley could aid Fields on the ground and provide an elite outlet in the passing game. Chicago also happens to lead the league in projected cap space and could lose starting back David Montgomery in free agency.”
Barkley, who has experienced a renaissance this term, would give the Bears a formidable backfield option should this come to fruition. The 25-year-old ended the regular season with 1,312 rushing yards, the fourth-highest in the NFL, as well as the ninth-most rushing touchdowns with 10.
He also made a career-high 295 rushing attempts to give the Giants the second-best rushing offense among teams making the playoffs. The Giants averaged 148.2 rushing yards per game as a team this season.
