The Chicago Bears are flying this offseason and are on a mission to surround quarterback Justin Fields with the best possible players.
The team committed to the QB following a season in which he made notable strides and confirmed as much by trading the No. 1 pick to the Carolina Panthers. They’ve since gone out and made some major signings, strengthening their offensive line in a bid to offer Fields added protection.
The backfield could use a bit of the generosity, however, with David Montgomery signing a three-year deal with the Detroit Lions. While the Bears are bringing Khalil Herbert and Trestan Ebner back, there’s little doubt GM Ryan Poles will continue working to improve the roster.
The Bears are now being linked to Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler, who has been granted permission to speak with other teams.
Given Ekeler’s availability, he’s likely on Chicago’s radar. He would also compensate for the loss of Montgomery as he can be just as good of a pass blocker and receiver. There’s no word on what the Chargers would want in exchange for the 27-year-old, but the Bears are strapped with assets after their trade with the Panthers and could be tempted to include one in a potential trade.

The Bears are going to do right by Fields this year, or at least they’re going to try their utmost best. Should he not succeed in 2023/24, they should still have enough assets to pick a good QB from next year’s draft.
