Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is reportedly under consideration for the head coaching job in Chicago.
According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, the Bears have begun to list potential candidates for the job in case Matt Eberflus gets fired and “are expected to have an interest” in the Commanders OC.
Eberflus hasn’t been able to make a significant impact on the Bears since taking over; the team is 7-22 as he approaches his 30th game in charge. Chicago could look to pull the plug in the offseason and could be headed toward another rebuild if they get the No. overall pick again.
That could also mean the end of Justin Fields, though previous rumors claimed the Bears are still keen on building around him and adding top-tier receivers.
Should they go for Bienemy, Chicago might not have a clear path to the OC as he’s likely to attract other suitors, though it’s hard to tell how much his chances of getting hired for the top job have improved after 13 games. It’s also worth noting that the Bears have won as many games as the Commanders, who are 4-9.
Still, the offense has improved under him. Sam Howell’s 3,466 passing yards are the second-highest in the league while the Bears have gone from 30th to 23rd in defense-adjusted value over average.
